The Mountain Running program is designed as an exciting option to explore new mountains, routes, as well as technical mountain running skill and fitness. Join a great group of mountain runners who love to travel light and quick in the Chugach Front Range!

There’s nothing like getting out into the mountains after a long day, celebrating the unique opportunity we have under the Alaskan midnight sun. We study the art of moving fluently through the rough mountains, searching for our inner mountain goats, and using our human minds to lean on elite mountain running techniques and training.

April 29 to August 26 …….. $350
Tuesday evenings, 6:30 – 8:00 PM

  • Hilltop Ski Area (map link) – Meet at the far end of the inner parking area at the Nordic Ski Trailhead.

  • Glen Alps (map link) – Meet at the main trailhead.
  • Prospect Heights (map link) – Meet at the main trailhead.
  • Upper Huffman (map link) – Meet at the main trailhead.
  • Health – Participants must be healthy to participate in practice. Stay home and take rest when you’re sick. Communicate with the Coach any existing injuries that may be affected by performing in our practice activities.
  • Basic Mountain Fitness – Participants should be able to move non-stop on foot for at least 90 minutes. The group moves efficiently, running flat and gradual terrain, and ascending and descending safely in the steep and technical mountain terrain. Traditionally, members of this group can complete the round trip to at least the Flat Top summit from the Glen Alps trailhead in 90 minutes, while front runners may round trip to Peak 2 and back in the same time.
  • Mountain/Backcountry Sense – Participants should be able to safely navigate in the mountains by themselves if they become separated from others, and be prepared with appropriate clothing (see Equipment).

There are many competition options during the Alaskan Summers, but not required!

Equipment

  • Trail Running Shoes – Shoe with good tread for trails, mud, snow, and rocks. Ask a coach if you’d like advice on specific shoes.
  • Running vest or drink belt – Something to carry water, a light snack, and extra clothing.
  • Bear Spray – Not required, but recommended for all who are comfortable carrying it. Must be contained in a carrying device (scat belt, running vest, etc.) not carried in hand.
  • Sun Glasses
  • Brimmed hat or visor – Particularly nice if you wear glasses and it is raining, or to keep sun off your face.

Clothing

Weather in the mountains during our season can vary from snow to very warm temperatures. Dressing appropriately for the conditions is the responsibility of each member. Below are some good things to wear or have in the pack for a mountain run. Many local races require all of the below listed items so it may be good practice to carry them during training!

  • Hat – Something to keep your ears warm and your head covered.
  • Gloves – Low profile but warm is ideal.
  • Buff – Some may prefer this to a hat as an ear covering.
  • Jacket – Windbreaker or light rain shell. Something that you can move in that isn’t overly bulky, but will block wind and/or rain.
  • Pants/tights – Lightweight synthetic running pants or wind pants are ideal.
  • Long Sleeve Top – Synthetic or Wool.
  • Shorts – Preferably a design that allows you to move freely. Some may consider compression style shorts for snow sliding.
  • Short sleeve shirt – Tee or Tank top. Preferably synthetic or wool to help regulate temp in changing conditions.
